The most popular spring seed varieties change from year to year. Just by pulling spring seed orders over the last two weeks, I can tell you what seeds are going to be hot this spring. These are the seeds that are flying off of our shelves now in January.
Several years ago, David put together a Spring Seed Varieties pack for Texas. You can get everything you need for an awesome vegetable garden in the spring in Texas.
Today was an extremely busy Monday! I started working in my home office around 7am and went out to Fulfillment at 9am. I opened the store, fed the fish, and started closing seed orders filled with many spring seed varieties. Soon, our first customer showed up followed by the second and several more. We ended up having quite a few visitors and customers, all before noon. Some bought seeds and one wanted us to donate to a fund raiser.
The orders have been rolling in all weekend. I had to stay in Fulfillment until 6:30pm to finish closing the orders. We did not have much of a dinner. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a little easier. We are grateful for the orders, but Mondays are rough because we are doing four days worth of orders, from Friday until Monday. We were so busy on Saturday that I did not have time to pull any orders from Friday.
If you have ordered seeds from us this weekend, they are on their way or they will be tomorrow. The mailman came early today. On Mondays, he normally doesn't come until 4pm. Today he came before noon. I have two huge mail bags filled with orders for him to take tomorrow.
All of our pickled foods are now gone as well as our pecan treats. We still have the pecan flavored coffees and we'll be keeping them, at least for now. They are delicious.
David has been doing some calculating. Our egg price for a dozen eggs was $3.50 until today. We are spending a lot more on feed since the prices were raised. Eggs per dozen are costing from $4 to $9 a dozen now. We were never making money on the eggs, especially when you factor in the light being on all night in the coop during the winter months, and the cost of cartons and stickers that we are required to put on the egg cartons. So we had to raise the price of eggs up to $5 a dozen, not something we wanted to do but we are losing money, especially lately when we are getting three to five eggs a day, just enough for us to eat.
People are constantly messaging me asking for four to seven dozen eggs at a time. I don't even get seven eggs in one day, let alone seven dozen since the cold of winter. Yes, it has been warm lately, but there is not enough light in the day for the chickens to lay. I turn on the coop light at night but, so far, it is not working much.
One of the customers who came into the store today said Walmart was charging $9 for 18 eggs. Wow! I have not looked at eggs in the store for a long time (three years) because we have our own eggs. The price of feed has gone up significantly just like the price of everything else.
The first of the popular 2023 spring seed varieties is the Juliet Plum Tomato. We have been out of this wonderful, heat-resistant, plum tomato since March of 2022. Guess what? We just got it back in stock! We have a lot but it will be gone before the spring is over, just like last year. If you are smart, you will order the Juliet tomato seeds now to be sure you get some.
The favorite spring seed varieties of beefsteak tomatoes are the Homestead, the Tycoon, the Purple Cherokee, and the Mortgage Lifter.
The favorite slicing tomatoes of the season are the Celebrity, Arkansas Traveler, Bonny Best, and Floradade. The four colors of Brandywine beefsteak tomatoes are also getting picked a lot in the orders for spring seed varieties. We have black, pink, red, and yellow, all with a delicious flavor and nice texture.
The most shipped out cherry tomatoes are the Supersweet 100, the Sun Gold, Matt's Wild, Gold Nugget, and Large Red.
Today would be my father's 92nd birthday, if he were still alive. Unfortunately, he passed over 31 years ago back in El Paso, Texas.
It is foggy again this morning and 57°. We do get a lot of fog out here in the country. David has another blood draw this morning for doctor visits coming up, just routine.
I have a ton of website orders for many spring seed varieties to mail out this morning. I will be getting on that soon.
Let's talk about looking us up for our address and hours. Google and Yelp and any other customer-inspired websites are out of our control. They have all different addresses and hours from years ago posted. Keep it simple and just go to David's Garden Seeds® to check us out. Every week, people complain to us because our old address and hours are wrong on those types of sites. We have "edited" them many times but the next morning, they revert back to what was on them. This is why I always give customers a business card with our website addresses. Always refer to our websites for the hours and address.
Our hours are clearly posted on our website but you have to go to our website, not yelp or google or anything else. We have been trying for years to fix the address and hours on them but each night, it reverts back to what they had as our information. We hired media professionals to fix them. Same thing. We got a letter from one of those sites saying they would change it for $300. No. We never asked them to put our information up. They have the address as being one of our San Antonio addresses and the hours being those we kept back in 2017. The business has changed drastically since then.
Speaking of the address, David also got a phone call today from a would be customer who was not happy that we moved to Poteet. He went to our old address courtesy of the internet and found a church there. He said he will not drive all the way out here to shop for seeds. There is always the option to order online. We moved because we wanted to get out of the city and have room to grow, which we now have. We moved out here three and a half years ago.
The most often purchased spring seed varieties of lettuce are the Paris White Cos Romaine, Butterhead Bibb, and Great Lakes Mesa Iceberg lettuce. We have a lot of lettuce varieties but these three consistently are chosen by most of our online customers.
Well, good morning. It is another foggy morning, thicker than yesterday's fog! Matt is here printing out seed orders. He took care of the outdoor animals for me which I appreciate. It is pretty wet and cold out there at 51°.
Well, it is about time that I get dressed and ready for another day of filling orders for spring seed varieties. We have a lot of them. Thank you to everyone.
Today was another very busy day. It is 5pm. I finished with orders at 4:30pm and then went to display the new coffee beans that came in today. We just got a brand new shipment of your favorite whole bean pecan coffee flavors! They smell heavenly.
We had some customers and one person who wants us to sponsor or partner with him and go into the Poteet School to teach elementary kids how to grow things. The problem is he wants tomato seeds to be planted in March in cups inside the classroom to take home in May and plant. Too hot by May for tomatoes to grow most years here. I told him the tomatoes need to be planted now in January so they can be put in the ground in March. I also said the curriculum needs to be changed a bit to fit tomatoes in but he said that would not be happening. He said last year they grew pinto beans. Those died in the cups in school because there were no drain holes in the bottom of the cup. I explained there have to be drain holes. I raised three kids so I know how they work. I know those kids are throwing water in their plants every single day and there is no place for the water to go so the roots rotted out. I suggested growing the zinnia or okra because both love the Texas heat. Obviously, the curriculum is being planned by someone who is not a gardener.
Anyway, I have done a whole lot today and I am tired. I am going into the house to tackle the breakfast dishes and conjure up something for dinner. Ha-ha!
It is hot, 83°! It turned out to be a beautiful day once the fog cleared. I put more algae killer in the pond followed by de-chlorinator and then I filled it up again. The fish look good and the babies are getting so big.
Cristian from Hondo came to help us again. All of our garlic bulbs are now gone. The ones that were left have been planted in our back 40. It is getting a bit late to plant garlic. We should have plenty of garlic bulbs in October for sale from our farm.
We don't sell seed potatoes but I ordered seed potatoes and seed sweet potatoes for my own personal planting. I am so excited as I have wanted to grow potatoes for a long time. We have a lot of different varieties coming, even purple potatoes. I sure hope it is a good year and they grow well.
This year, 2023, for spring seed varieties of corn, the most popular have been the Double Standard Sweet Corn, Country Gentleman Sweet Corn, and the Red Husk Spectrum Ornamental Corn.
Good morning! I am printing out orders for spring seed varieties and getting ready for another busy day. There will be an emphasis on getting back into social media starting today. I have not had time to do much because most of my day is now taken up with orders. We have hired a few more people to help so I can go back to promoting our company, David's Garden Seeds®.
Good news! No fog this morning. It is breezy and started at 54°. Today, I took care of some customers and we had some guests. We have hired someone to help with outdoor work but he cannot start until next Tuesday.
The chilly wind has picked up and it is 12:15pm and only 63°. The low will be 37° tonight. I just ate lunch and am in the store with another customer. He does not want any help so I am doing some computer work.
We ended up having several customers. After work, I noticed that people were posting that Lisa Marie Presley went into cardiac arrest at her home. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
I took a tumble on the deck going up the steps between Production and Fulfillment today. I like to wear crocs because they are comfortable, especially while my toe is still healing from New Year's Eve morning when I broke it. So I loosely had my crocs on (not in sport mode) and the toe caught the wood under the top step and down I went. It seemed like I was moving in slow motion as it always does when I fall. Everything in my hands went flying and I thought to myself that I couldn't believe I was falling again. Then a big, painful, loud thud on my hands and knees. Fun times. Of course, one employee came running so she gets to keep her job. Everyone else ignored it but I guess they are used to it. My mother should have named me Grace! LOL!
As we were watching TV last night, I saw announcements that Lisa Marie had passed on at the age of 54. How sad.
The most popular spring seed varieties of cabbage that I have shipped out are the Red Express, the Red Acre, and the Golden Acre cabbage. These are tasty varieties that we have grown ourselves.
Good morning. It is 35° and I got to experience it standing outside this morning with Ethel in the dark while she did her business.
This morning, we are putting our whole pecan flavored coffee beans on the website for sale to everyone. We have eight pecan varieties of pure deliciousness! We will ship them or you can pick some up next time you come to the Farm Store.
David and I had to run into town for another vision exam for David, his third since he got diabetes. It is getting old but because of the insulin, his vision keeps changing. He had an eye exam on October 24, another in November, and now this one today. Fun...
I was able to get some groceries and supplies. Walmart eggs, one dozen white in the blue foam container are $5.18 so my farm fresh blues, greens, and browns with orange yokes should sound pretty good at $5.00 a dozen. They certainly come from chickens having a fun life, not hens in little cages with no social interaction.
Friday is normally our busy day of the week for customers and we have not had one. It is 3:20pm already. Strange, huh?
I have been stocking the shelves today and adding things to the website. Someone called to see if we will be open on Monday, January 16, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Yes, we will be open from 9am to 5pm so come by and see us if you can. Or come tomorrow. We will be open from 10am to 2pm.
Today, my lower back has been bothering me and I am guessing it is from yesterday's fall where I jarred myself. Don't forget the allergies in the air that keep blowing through.
The most popular bean spring seed varieties that people are ordering are the bush bean Contender, bush bean Dragon's Tongue, bush bean Provider, pole bean Fortex, and the White Kidney dry bean.
This morning, it was 35° when I woke up. At 10am, it is now 50° so it has warmed up significantly. The fish are just standing still in the pond down at the bottom. They do that every time the weather gets really cold.
Before coming over to the store this morning, I was able to get some laundry started and do my breakfast dishes so I feel pretty good about it, unlike last Saturday. However, no one has come yet so I am questioning why it is that I have to be over here. I figured the cold would keep people away.
Shortly after I wrote the above paragraph in the store, most of Texas, or so it seemed, came to visit me, in groups of two or three families at a time. The last set of people left at 1:55pm and we closed at 2pm so it was great! I met a lot of nice people and David took several families on two separate tours. No one else worked today, just the two of us. Sometimes, we get four to six who will work but not today. The temperature finally warmed up enough that we took off our jackets and turned off our heaters.
I came home and folded all of the laundry. First time in weeks...Then I sat down and put my foot up for a while as it was aching.
David made deer meat for dinner. I made some homemade chocolate mint ice cream for dessert which came out pretty good. Svengoolie was the Invisible Man and we saw that recently so we watched some bizarre movie called Downsizing with Matt Damon, where people were shrinking down to five inches to live the good life. It was weird.
Matt came over with animal feed and unloaded it in our little John Deere.
The spring seed varieties of squash and zucchini for the 2023 growing season are the Black Beauty Zucchini, Winter Spaghetti Squash, Yellow Crookneck Summer Squash, and Straightneck Summer Squash.
Good morning and happy Sunday! All of the animals are now fed. As I went out to feed the fish this morning, I decided to try something new that I have not done before. I posted stories to Instagram, recording the parking lot, unlocking the store, and feeding the fish. I need to get used to being on camera because I am going to start recording videos to get our channels to grow. Fun times. I have noticed that most homesteading channels that sell products also have active YouTube channels. So if you want to watch, sign up now on both of our YouTube channels listed below:

You may notice there is a train wreck on my channel. Yes, I videoed that train wreck and, yes, I said Holy Mother of Moo Moo. I was sitting in the backseat of my father-in-law's truck. He and David were in the front seat. I captured the wreck with a Flip video camera, not a phone. At the time, that was our only recording device and it did a good job. Our video went viral. We earned a ton of money from it. We were even interviewed on a British television show after it which was a lot of fun. That was back in October of 2014.
It is time to get ready for church so I had better sign off from here for now.
We are back from church. It is chilly outside but the weather says it is 76° now. It is not warm, trust me. The wind is strong and cool. I have a roast in the crockpot with vegetables for dinner.
We were in the greenhouse this morning checking on the heaters. We have a lot of baby lemons growing in there on the trees. It is very exciting.
The spring seed varieties of cucumber being ordered the most right now for 2023 are the Diva slicing cucumber, the Boston pickling cucumber, and the Burpless Tendergreen Slicing cucumber. We carry a lot of cucumbers and, yes, many others are selected as well on the hundreds of orders we are getting each week but these are the most popular.
