Hot Fudge Sundae Cake

I have been baking hot fudge sundae cake in a square pan for many years. It serves nine and is delicious plain or with vanilla ice cream on top. Serve it nice and warm in a deep bowl.

This cake is also known as lava cake or molten lava cake. I don't know how or why it works, but when it comes out of the oven, there will be liquid hot fudge in the middle of the cake that will ooze out. Slice the cake inside of the cake pan and then spoon it out into bowls. It will be the most delicious thing you have eaten all day long.

I like to cook mine while we are eating dinner and then serve it as soon as the table is cleared. You can also wait about an hour and surprise everyone with it as you all sit down to watch a video together. I have done this with company. Just send everyone out of the kitchen and into the living room and clean up while it bakes. Then serve it while you watch a movie.

I prefer to use a glass nine inch by nine inch pan. Cut three inch by three inch pieces and place in bowls. Top with vanilla ice cream and take a trip to heaven!

Hot Fudge Sundae Cake Ingredients

You will need:

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional, any kind. I use pecans.)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 and 3/4 cups hot tap water

Hot Fudge Sundae Cake Recipe

Preheat your oven to 350° Fahrenheit. Do not grease, flour, or spray a nine by nine inch glass pan.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, two tablespoons of cocoa powder, the baking powder, and salt. Mix well.

Stir in milk, oil, and vanilla and mix it together with the dry ingredients. Add the nuts and stir.

Pour mixture into the ungreased glass pan. Over the top, sprinkle with brown sugar and 1/4 cup of cocoa powder.  Pour the hot water over the top of the cake batter.

Bake for 40 minutes. Serve warm, topped with ice cream. Spoon the hot fudge from the pan over each serving. Be careful. The hot fudge oozes out everywhere so use a spoon to get it out of the pan and into deep bowls. Makes nine servings.
