This week, we are looking at herbs for inflammation. Back before modern medicine, if someone had inflammation, that person could go out to the garden and pick something to take the inflammation away. Inflammation causes pain and discomfort and is no fun. Therefore, we need to do something to alleviate it. It is always nice when we can use a natural method like something out of the garden instead of having to take big drugs.
One of the best things we can do is grow herbs and then dry them in a food dehydrator. Store them in mason jars, labeled with what is in the jar and the date it was put there. From there, you can make a tea when you need it out of them.
You can grow herbs all year long if you keep them in pots. Just move the pots indoors during freezes and keep them in a sunny spot during the winter in the house. That way you will have herbs for inflammation close by when you need them.
I also read an article that says garlic is used to alleviate inflammation. We have sold out of our garlic at this time, but I will leave a link for where to find it. We usually get new garlic in the fall.
As I was researching material for this page, I found that we carry 12 of the popular herbs for inflammation. This week, we will look at the following for inflammation relief:
Here is a link to the herb seeds on David's Garden Seeds® for your convenience.
The above 12 herbs can easily be grown in your garden. Garlic, which is Sunday's anti-inflammatory, can also be grown in your garden. Once they are grown, you need to preserve them. Again, the best way is to pick, clean, and dehydrate them in a food dehydrator. Once they are dry, put them in clean, dry mason jars that are clearly labeled. Many can be made into teas that you can drink for inflammation or added to foods that you cook.
If you do not want to grow them, you can find many of them made into pill form in health food stores and in the supplement section of your pharmacy.

Good Monday morning. We are starting the day off at 38° Fahrenheit with two people missing from work. Fun times. The orders are through the roof so it will be a very busy day. Matt has been here since 5:30am working on orders. No one asked him to do this. I am glad he works for us. He is taking it all in stride, like the pro he is.
I need to pack up some eggs and head over to the store. I have four dozen eggs today. Can you believe that? They started laying more again since last Thursday. I still don't have full capacity but a whole lot more than two a day!
The orders are being filled by a team of three today so it will be a bit slow. I fixed some order errors and showed a new person how to reship.
We got the filters and cups for the coffee demos in the store so if you want to stop by and have a cup of pecan coffee, we have the beans ready to grind.
I added algae killer to the pond today and then de-chlorinated it. I filled it up to the top. Encino Pest Control came and sprayed. Matt left at 3:30pm because he has been here since 5:30am printing orders.
We had zero customers today because it is so cold. I know nobody around here wants to think about planting a garden when it is so cold. I hear it is supposed to start raining in the early hours of the morning. Tomorrow, we were supposed to start working on the potato trench but it will be too muddy if we get all of that rain.
I need to go out and tend to the animals and get some more eggs. For some reason, the chickens gave just six eggs today instead of the usual 13 I have been getting for the past four days in a row. It was overcast and cold all day long.
Today, we will look at Calendula and Chamomile.
You can make Calendula into a tea to drink or you can mix the crushed leaves and flowers into some cream or lotion and apply it topically to the inflamed area.
Calendula gets its anti-inflammatory properties from linoleic acid which is naturally in Calendula. It is good for treating diaper rash, sore throats, ulcers, and dermatitis. It can also be used to fight infections and promote good oral health. Ask your doctor if calendula can work for you in any of the listed situations.
How many of you have made Sleepy Time tea or any other name brand of chamomile tea? Now you can make your own chamomile tea by growing and drying the flowers and leaves. It relaxes you and helps you fall to sleep.
Chamomile is also good for pain relief, for digestive issues, and reducing inflammation. It can calm your digestive problems, ulcerative colitis, and is good to drink as a tea for osteoarthritis flare ups. Again, ask your doctor if you can benefit from drinking chamomile.
Good Tuesday morning. It is raining and dark at 7:25am. The temperature is 53° and it is Matthew's birthday! In case you are new here, Matthew is our son and he works for us. He is an awesome, talented, single musician. Ladies, if you are interested, he is still searching for a good wife.
So I have some nice gifts for him but forgot what he asked for until the middle of the night. He doesn't want a cake. He wants a blueberry pie. I have to go into San Antonio today with David for a doctor appointment so we will stop and pick him up a blueberry pie.
I had a terrible time logging into any of my work spaces on the computer this morning. I am finally there. I know the WiFi (such as it is) is going in and out. That is one of the downsides of living out in the country. Not much in the way of WiFi or internet coverage. We keep calling but we have one option and it is how we have continued to run our business for over three years. Slowly, but surely.
I got Matt's gifts ready and piled them on the coffee table. I wrapped them in a blanket because the main gift is too big any bag I have.
We left the farm at 9am and the rain just poured down heavily, most of the way there. It was so scary to be on the freeway and roads in San Antonio with all of the crazy drivers on our tail. We almost bit it several times. We finally arrived and it was pouring again. We found a space in the parking garage and got into the office just in time. This is a giant office with lots of doctors. They decided we all had to stand in a line to check in with one girl for all of the doctors. We finally got up there and the appointment had come and gone. She started asking stupid questions and made us pay $100 upfront. We never pay until we get the bill in the mail.
She finally let us go back to our doctor's waiting room, making us more than 15 minutes late. Good thing the doctor is running late. The aide called and we followed her. Then the nurse came in and was very happy with David's test results. Then the doctor came in about 50 minutes after our appointment time. He said he could not be happier with David's test results and he won't see him again for six months.
By the time we got out of there, the rain had stopped. We went in search of a blueberry pie. Why does no one have them? Is there some sort of blueberry disease that we have not heard of? I finally got to HEB and we bought blueberries. I came home and made a blueberry pie. In fact, I just took it out of the oven.
Once the work day was over, David and I took Matt to Railhead Cafe in Lytle for dinner. Matt had been there before but it was new to us. It is a homestyle cooking style with good, wholesome food and really great fried mushrooms. David had the chicken fried steak and told them it was the best he has ever had. Matt ordered some Louisiana Boudin Balls and they were good. Then back to our home for blueberry pie and gifts. We got Matt his own Instant Pot and accessories including an Instant Pot cookbook. Blueberry pie? Yes, he told me last month that he wanted one instead of a cake. It was delicious by the way.
Here in Texas, we use the leaves of the cilantro plant for flavor. Back East, the seeds (coriander) for flavoring dishes. But did you know that this herb has anti-oxidant properties as well as anti-inflammatory properties?
It can also help remove toxins from your body and helps with digestive issues. Talk to your doctor about how cilantro can help you.
Echinacea fights infection, helps to reduce pain, and can boost your immune system. It also reduces inflammation due to arthritis. Talk to your doctor if you suffer from arthritis to see if echinacea can help you.
Hello and happy Wednesday. Although it was 38° when we got up this morning, it has warmed up to 59° and it is bright and sunny. So warm looking that so far today, we had five groups of customers already and it is only 2pm. I sold eggs, some tomato seedlings, germination mix, and a ton of seeds. Spring planting is back on!
Dawson, who has worked for us twice before, started back with us today. Nacho is here working on some projects in the back 40.
I had time to go plant my bonsai tree seeds that I started soaking last Friday. For a while, I could not find the rest of my bonsai seeds to soak but I finally found them.
Also, last Friday, I soaked some pink banana seeds per the directions. Last time I tried planting them, I did not soak them first. Nothing happened. So this time, I soaked them. I planted them this afternoon and they are in pots on heat mats in the kitchen. My bonsai are on my kitchen windowsill.
I went out in my greenhouse and watered all of the seeds that I started out there last Friday as well as all of the other plants and trees I have out there. We have been keeping everything warm with heaters in both greenhouses.
David has about 4,000 tomato and pepper seedlings that he is growing. Some are already the right size to sell so we sold some this morning to two different ladies. My feet are tired and I am grateful to finally be sitting. It has been a very busy day.
We have a total of 11 bags of my Mrs. David's Garden Seeds® Zinnia Mix seeds all packaged up and ready for spring planting. Zinnias love the heat of summer and will be beautiful until the first fall frost. We also have a lot of germination soil mix bagged up and ready for sale. That is it, just 11. Who will be among the lucky 11 to get my special mix of zinnia seeds?
I managed to get 16 eggs when I put the chickens away this evening. I fed every animal and then we went to Bible study where I took this cool photo.
We have grown Holy Basil many times. We have heard about the many healing properties of Holy Basil from customers coming to our store to buy the seeds. Holy Basil fights infections--viral, fungal, and bacterial so that is awesome. It also can relieve headaches and sinus pressure. It is good for your teeth and your heart as well. It also has anti-inflammatory properties so be sure to ask your doctor about using it.
It is caffeine-free and is easy to add the leaves to food or to make a tea out of the leaves and drink in all of the benefits.
I grow Lemon Balm almost every year. It is a member of the mint family and is easy to grow, even if you are a beginner. The leaves smell and taste like lemon. You can make the leaves into a tea and it is an anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever. It also relieves stress and anxiety, headaches, and digestive problems. It is even said to help heal wounds.
You can use the leaves to flavor iced tea or make a lemon balm tea.
Good morning and welcome to Thursday! Today, we are taking Matt and our pastor to eat at Salt Grass in San Antonio. It was 35° this morning at 6am when I woke up. It is now 8am and still 35°. That is weird. We are having visitors to help us today.
It is time for me to get ready for the day and go greet my public.
It is now 3pm and still chilly at 58°. No customers at all today because it was cold again. David and I took Matt, Josh, and Pastor Jerry to Saltgrass Steakhouse in San Antonio for a nice lunch. Then we came back to the farm for cake and cards for all three birthday boys. We went to Jupe Mills in Somerset for some Surrender cutter ant killer. We heard it works great but have never tried it before. The cutter ants just keep coming to kill and destroy the orchard and plants in the garden. They are pure evil.
I used the handheld vacuum over in Production to vacuum up some okra seeds and debris from our okra and when I went to dump it, it was all clumped in, moldy, and wet inside. It was vulgar. Who knew that someone would vacuum up something wet and leave it to mold. This is a vacuum I bought with my own money when we were in San Antonio. I cannot believe that anyone would do that instead of dumping it. So I have spent a good long time washing the pieces and cleaning them. They are now drying as long as no one throws the pieces away.
I got ten eggs from our chickens today.
Well, here it is Thursday night and I am waiting for Gordon Ramsay to come on. We have leftovers for lunch so I do not have to cook tonight. David had the double thick pork chop which looks really good. I should have ordered that but I did not think of it and decided to go with the Salmon Oscar which has bits of crab meat on top of the salmon. The trouble is I ate too many of the appetizers and bread, not to mention the delicious potato soup, so I could not finish my meal. I will be nuking it shortly and watching Hell's Kitchen, which I love.
We are updating our inventory and listings, dropping what is not selling well, and trying to keep up with our seed orders. We have had some absences this week but we are fighting hard to keep up with demand and so far, our team is doing a great job. Thank you to all of you who have come to the Farm Store to shop and to all of you across the USA who order seeds from us. This spring, the peat moss pots, small plastic pots, and the rest of our CowPots are also on sale and can be shipped as well as our gourmet pecan coffees.
I am going to go back to working on the website now but wanted to wish you all a good night!
Aside from tasting good in Italian dishes, oregano helps to relieve chronic inflammation, helps with indigestion and respiratory issues, fights infections, and can help with diabetes and arthritis. It is a member of the mint family and is easy to grow. Be sure to ask your doctor about using oregano to help with any of the above listed medical problems.
Some people think that parsley is just for a decorative garnish on a plate but it is so much more. You can actually eat parsley. Parsley is easy to grow from seed. In fact, I have about six parsley plants that are growing in my greenhouse right now that you can buy. Of course, we also have the seeds. Parsley is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It also promotes overall health with antioxidants,
carotenoids, and
ascorbic acid. See what your doctor says about adding it to your diet to promote your well-being.
Good Friday morning! The sky was beautiful as the sun came up today at 37°. It is 8am and, hopefully, everyone is out there, working. I am at my desk eating breakfast but I have been working for over an hour. My seed potatoes are chitting out on the island. They are coming along and I am excited about planting potatoes for the first time!
For the first time this week, we had all eight of us here to work and get things done.
It is now almost 5pm. It stayed cold all day long and we had just one couple come out in the cold to get some tomato seeds. I spent most of the day doing listings online.
We will be open in the morning from 10am until 2pm. I should have at least four dozen eggs plus we do have some tomato seedlings and lots of seeds. Come by and see us in the morning.
Rosemary looks like a pine tree but it is a wonderful smelling herb used in dishes and for other purposes.
Right now, I have six Rosemary plants in my greenhouse that you can buy. We also have the seeds. The essential oils from Rosemary promote anti-inflammatory health. It also is good for pain relief and boosts memory and focus clarity. It is said to improve the mood and clear the mind.
Sage is known as a spice to use on your turkey every November for Thanksgiving. It smells so good. Don't eat it raw. It needs to be cooked before you use it. It has been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years. It fights infections and reduces inflammation.
It is a rainy, very cloudy day. Everything is cold and wet with no sun showing. I doubt we see customers in the store today because they usually only show up on sunny days. I have a bad sinus headache this morning and one nostril is plugged. I still have to go out back and feed the chickens, guineas, and rabbits but the fish have been fed.
Well, let me tell you! I was watering the grow tower. I managed to dump six gallons of water into it and the first set of customers showed up. While they were shopping, another set came. The first set went out to the greenhouse to get some tomato seedlings and another group of four showed up. I finally rang up the second set of people and then the third set of people. Then I rang up the first set of people's seeds but they were not back yet. More customers came in. Finally, the first people came back with seven seedlings. I finished ringing them up and then more came in. Turns out we had seven groups of customers and most of the purchases were pretty good!
I sold some eggs, seedlings, and all the rest were seeds. No coffee, no pots, no germination kits or soil as I usually sell on Saturdays. It was different. Then it was 2pm and I closed. David and I never had a chance to get lunch. I heated up some frozen dinners. The oven stayed on from breakfast even though it was turned off. We could not get it off. David finally had to turn off the fuse. That worked.
Tomorrow, we are having a church potluck. I put together some cheese enchiladas and beef enchiladas, all homemade and stuck them in the refrigerator. I will bake them in the morning. I cannot wait to eat them. I know they will be good because I have been making them for many years, before I was ever married. A friend of mine in El Paso taught me how to make them when we lived there. I hope we have leftovers so we can eat them again tomorrow night!
I got the eggs. Even though it stayed gloomy and wet all day long, they gave a good amount. I got a notice on my phone that the video I ordered from Amazon could not be delivered because the gates close at 4pm on Saturdays. I have in the directions to slip it through the fence but this delightful driver did not. She said she will attempt to come back tomorrow again. I guess I won't be getting it because the gate is closed all day long on Sundays. There are big gaps and every other Amazon driver has always dropped packages through the fence. So I guess I will be buying the new Elvis movie from Walmart since Amazon has been hiring more and more incompetents.
You have no idea what we go through selling our seeds on Amazon. Thirteen years ago, they had some good people who cared. Now? Ha! Every day there is a new problem that they make up. Fun times. Their deliveries out here to bring goods that we buy have not been very good for the most part. It takes much longer, they deliver to the wrong address, or they arbitrarily decide that we are closed so they won't deliver on weekends. Yes, we have our business here but we also live here. Yes, we close early on Saturdays and the gate is on a timer but the gate has room to slip packages in. How hard is that, especially when I have in my delivery instructions to put it through the gate and go on about your life? LOL! Common sense is dead and gone.
Tonight, we had some delicious Chinese food for Happy New Year while we watched the original Godzilla movie with Raymond Burr.
Spearmint is my favorite mint. It is easy to grow and I love adding it to my iced tea.You can make a tea out of spearmint leaves. You can also make spearmint jelly which is wonderful on toast and it goes with lamb so well.
It has anti-inflammatory properties. It can fight bacteria and fungal infections, ease digestion problems, and boost memory.
St. Johns Wort is taken orally and used topically in creams to treat inflammation on skin and for chronic diseases. It is commonly used for eczema and dermatitis. It can also boost your mood and help you to fight depression. Ask your doctor if it is right for you.
Good morning. It is foggy, rainy, and warmer at 50°. It actually feels colder in the house than outside. I am having some coffee as I work. I went outside with Ethel but have not yet fed the animals outside. I have to bake my enchiladas this morning.
The potluck was really good and we had a good time visiting with all of our new friends there. Almost everyone had good words to say about my enchiladas so that was nice. I got home and cleaned up the kitchen from breakfast and now I am working on our tomato listings. Not all of them say whether or not the tomato varieties are determinate or indeterminate so that is what I am doing. I need to fold laundry and other things as well.
David was out in the greenhouse for a while but now he is chilling in the den. Anyway, we hope you are having a good Sunday. It is pretty warm outside at 75° but I am freezing in here. We hope to see you this week in the Farm Store if you are close enough.
So today we will talk about garlic which is something we sell in the fall only.
David gets garlic bulbs in every fall, somewhere around October. We grow garlic every year. It is good to cook with. It also relieves inflammation and pain in the joints. It also helps with lowering cholesterol and high blood pressure. Garlic boosts the immune system. If you have never grown garlic, here is a link to my article on how to grow garlic.
