If you 're like most gardeners, you want to plant wildflower seeds in the fall to come up in early spring. They will bring pollinators to your garden in the spring. In our Farm Store, we have a whole section with just wildflowers because they are different than regular flowers. Most regular flower seeds do not have to be planted in fall. You can actually plant regular flower seeds in the early spring. Bluebonnets and all other wildflowers need to be put in the ground in October in Texas. Wildflower seeds need the cold temperatures that winter brings so they can properly germinate in early spring.
Good rainy Monday morning! It is 67° and it is actually raining! It is still dark so I have not seen it but I can hear it! I have a lot of packets of wildflower seeds that I need to get in the ground today.
We have one person that we know will be out because of jury duty. It is 7:15am now and still dark. I have been awake for about 90 minutes but I am not going out in this darkness. Who knows how many snakes and spiders are out prowling around in the rain. I hit spiderwebs every day in the light. I knock them down and they rebuild. It is so dark.
I went over and unlocked all of the buildings at 7:40am and it was still sort of dark. I fed the fish and four cars pulled up, all of them our team members. I came back to the house, made myself an English muffin breakfast sandwich and David told me he just got a text from our outdoor person. She quit. It is still raining so she would have worked inside today, not outside. We are not mean and heartless but she didn't even ask, just quit. We saw that one coming with her going home early or calling in each week. She could have quit on Friday since she did not come in.
So now, once again, no outdoor person. We will be promoting someone inside to go do the outdoor work.
It is now 8:15am and the rain is still coming down. It started before 6am because I was awake.
It is 10:15am and it is still raining like crazy. I am in the store and I just went out to see the fish in the rain. The waterfall and filter have stopped working because whoever set up this last filter used an indoor power strip and did not put the power strip in one of those outdoor protectors. He also left it out on the ground instead of placing it in the gazebo. So hard to believe that we paid this guy so much money to do so much shoddy work. Matthew will have to install a protector and a clean, dry power strip. We do have some in one of our sheds.
Matt came and fixed everything and the falls and filter are once again working, this time nice and dry and not on the ground soaking wet.
The rain stopped for about an hour. I went over and got some lunch from the house. It is now 1:20pm and it is pouring again. So far, no customers today but I did not think there would be. The employee who has jury duty won't be in again tomorrow as he was put on a panel.
I am watching some Canva tutorials so I can learn how to do some things online better. I really have no idea how to do a lot of things. SBI is how I build this website and it is like Website Building For Dummies. Shopify is how we build David's Garden Seeds®. It is user friendly for customers but for those building the website, it is much harder than SBI. I really struggle with it some days. Then, of course, there is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and TikTok. Canva is supposed to be helpful with all of those. I will check it out.
Right around 2pm, the rain stopped and in walked my first customer of the day. Once she left, two more customers came in.
Once they were gone, the mailman got here. After that, we had no more customers. We got a lot of rain today and I heard we are supposed to get more tonight. It is currently 4pm and it is 66° Fahrenheit. David wants waffles tonight so I will pick a Cousin T pancake mix that we have not tried yet and make it. I plan on mixing some fruit in to make them a bit healthier.
I did notice that our baby fish we got just over two weeks ago have gotten just a tiny bit bigger. I am just glad we still have some.
Eleven years ago today, we brought Ethel home from the animal shelter in San Antonio to join our family. She was one year old and the most adorable little corgi we ever had. Now she is mostly deaf but still so cute.
We did not get anymore rain today or tonight. Per our rain gauge, we got just one half inch. It poured hard like crazy so I cannot believe that is all we got.
I made blueberry waffles, bacon, and eggs for dinner and it was really good. We are now on the final DVD of The Rockford Files TV show. However, I bought all of The Rockford Files movies that came out ten years after the show was over so we still have to get through them.
I got up while it was still dark this morning and got dressed. Then I stepped out back because the sky was turning a magnificent pink all over. I snapped a photo and heard my back gate open. I saw a figure but I could not make out who it was. At that hour, it could have been Matt but definitely should not have been anyone else. I was definitely freaked out.
I asked three times who was there. Finally, the person turned toward me and said his name. It was the person who quit after killing so many trees in the orchard just over two weeks ago. I asked him what he was doing here. He said he came with the lawn guy again. What? First, I did not know the lawn guy was coming here today. Last I heard, we were not using him again because he is disrespecting us by bringing this guy on our land. The last time the lawn guy was here, I specifically told him never to bring the ex-employee back here but he did. I know I was not unclear because I specifically told him not to bring him back.
Then, I went out front to feed my fish and it is still partly dark. A man, on the other side of the fence, says hello. I ask him who he is. I figured he is part of the lawn guy's new team. No, he says he is a surveyor. He has a shovel and he starts digging at our fence post with it, in between us and the neighbors at the right. He asks me a bunch of questions about property lines, fence posts, and property pins. I have no idea what he is talking about. I came out to feed my fish, not to talk with people in the dark.
I went back inside and told David. He went out there but, by that time, the guy is sitting in his truck so David came back. It is all very confusing to me. We are not selling so why do we need our land surveyed?
We just promoted one of our regular indoor guys to work outside with a nice raise. Well, on his first day, yesterday, he got jury duty and today he has jury duty again. So, without me knowing, David called the lawn guy. The lawn guy has made a huge fire out back and his assistant is mowing the property.
It is now 10:30am. The surveyor is now on the property to the left of us doing a surveying job way up at the top of the hill for the neighbor. So he was digging for the wrong neighbor instead of the guy who hired him and disturbing me when I was trying to care for my fish.
All right. Enough negativity. I am in the store since we are very shorthanded today. We have two people out and we just lost two more people. There are six of us here today to take care of everything, plus the three out back who shall remain nameless for now. So far, we have not had any customers.
The fall garden we planted over by the Farm Store is finally coming up nicely. The little plants on the right in the closest garden bed are my snapdragons that I planted from seed. Everything else is vegetables including corn in the farthest beds.
Now it is 11:10am and I feel like I have had a very full day. I am ready to go home.
It is 4pm. David and I ran into Devine to pick up an order from Tractor Supply. It is my new favorite store. I am doing social media posts.
Have you seen our garlic? While you are there, please like and subscribe and share our channel with your gardening friends. Thank you.
It is currently 72° and now it is calling for a bit of cooler weather with a low of 42° now. I say awesome! But by the end of the week, we will be back up in the 90s. It is almost the end of October so it should be cool, not summery. The cool air has been so nice and tomorrow it should be that way as well.
Matthew unloaded all of the animal supplies we got and that was so nice of him to do. I am going to fix some taquitos and queso for dinner followed by strawberries. I just watched Adam The Woo on YouTube eat two Burger King ghost pepper burgers and it looked kind of nasty. Adam is an enjoyable guy who does a lot of travel videos. I have learned about a lot of places by watching him.
I have some laundry going and I washed the guest room shower curtain and tub mat today because they really needed it. Also changed the kitty litter as it was nasty. It is heavy so Matt came over and helped me with it.
The sun goes down in one hour so I guess I better get cooking. This has been an exhausting and draining day. Y'all, have a good evening and enjoy the cool night because the heat will be back soon!
Happy Wednesday. At 6am, it was 48° and chilly enough that I am sitting at my desk in cozy clothes and a hoodie. I have a cup of coffee and am trying to enjoy the quiet. Maybe I will get to plant wildflower seeds today. I have so many here in my office that I need to get in the ground. October is the time to do it here in Texas. The wildflower seeds need to be cold before they will bloom so it is best to overwinter them.
If you forget to plant wildflower seeds in October, you can freeze them and then plant them but you could end up killing them, especially if you remove them from the freezer and then stick them back into the freezer. So I never freeze or refrigerate my seeds for this reason.
It is not raining outside and I don't think we are scheduled to go anywhere or have company so I think it is a go to plant wildflower seeds today.
Well, three of our people called in sick today. Two of them had yesterday off, one for personal reasons and the other for jury duty. So including David and me, there are five of us here. It dropped down to 46° by 8am. I am heading out now to pull orders and get them mailed out to you. Thank you for your seed orders. We do appreciate it, especially at this slower time of year for us.
I got all of my Shopify orders taken care of. I will monitor them throughout the day and get as many new ones completed as I can.
Meanwhile it is 68° and almost noon. It should hit 75° this afternoon.
It got a bit warm this afternoon but there was a hint of chilliness in the air all day long so that was nice.
We got eight eggs this evening from the chickens. I thought by now that we would be getting more normal amounts of eggs as it is cooler.
This page is supposed to be about wildflower seeds and I have hardly written anything about wildflower seeds at all. First, if you live in Texas, you need to get your wildflower seeds in the ground during the month of October. Why? Because wildflower seeds need to be stratified. That means they need to go through a period of being cold before they will germinate. If you forget by the end of October, put them in the ground in November. I will be planting bluebonnets and maroon bluebonnets plus a handful of other Texas wildflowers this week. I was going to do it today but we had so many call in that I had to do other things. Maybe tomorrow...
Do not just toss a handful of wildflower seeds and wish them well. They will either blow away, wash away, or get eaten by hungry birds and bugs. Do a bit of weeding. Clear the soil. Put the seeds directly in the soil, about 1/4 or less of an inch deep and cover with soil. Then gently water them. They should come up in March. When they do, don't pick them. Let them blossom and die on the stem so they can drop their seeds. If they are allowed to reseed, that means they will come up again the next March so you don't have to replant.
If you would like to purchase wildflower seeds, David's Garden Seeds® has plenty to choose from. You can find them here. We have wildflower seeds for all over the USA, not just Texas.
Good Thursday morning. I had to write two business bills this morning as someone will be by the Farm Store today to pick them up. It is chilly this morning, 47° but it is supposed to get up to 83° so here we go again! It is cold in this house right now. I guess I should have a hoodie on to warm up my arms.
As far as I know, there is nothing special going on today here. I have no idea if anyone will call in. They now all report to Matthew and he is not even here yet. David gave our employees new directions, to wait until 8am to call in so it is anybody's guess as to who will come in. Maybe all of them will be out today...I guess it could happen!
I got everything unlocked and fed the fish. A little while later, Matt showed up. He just told me that everyone is here! Yay!
I got a Lego catalog in the mail. It is filled with awesome sets that I know the grandkids would love. Too bad their parents won't allow us to see them anymore. We did nothing wrong. Their parents got in trouble and got the kids taken away. When we found out about it, they were already placed. The parents say we cannot have contact. In fact, they told CPS that we had not seen them in four years and wanted no contact. We had just had them one week before the incident happened. They never called us. We found out from a relative when she texted me asking if we were going to take the kids. I had no idea what she was even talking about. She knew the day it happened. We said we would be happy to take them but the parents would not allow it. I thought if they took your kids away that you did not have a say in what happens to them but that is false according to CPS. So that is that.
I just made the most amazing toasted English muffin sandwich with egg and sausage. It was so good. I need to get outside and find out what the plan is for everything. I also need to get my wildflower seeds planted.
Our pest control guy from Encino Pest Control just came to spray the commercial kitchen building so we had a good visit. This is a very friendly, family-owned company out of San Antonio and they always go out of their way to help us. If you need someone to help you out monthly or quarterly, give them a call.
I was outside just a moment ago, looking at our beautiful pole beans. We have three kinds, some with white flowers, some with yellow flowers, and some with purple flowers. Soon there will be delicious green beans to enjoy! I am so excited!
We had quite a few customers this afternoon with the last ones leaving just before 5pm! It was a beautiful day here with a bit of cool in the air all day long.
I went out at 6pm to get the eggs and I got a huge surprise! There were 16 eggs today, the most I have seen in over a month! I know it doesn't sound like much but I was getting two to six eggs a day for the past four weeks due to the heat and moulting.
Matt got us some quesadillas from Poteet and he went home. They were good. We are now watching Hell's Kitchen.
Good morning! I was actually able to put some eggs in the refrigerator at the store today! I have been writing bills, packing eggs, doing laundry, etc., all morning long. Now I am in the store working online. I also watered the plants out front but I need to go out back and water plants and trees. They have not been watered since the lovely rain we had on Monday.
I need to go out and plant my wildflower seeds. But I also need to get online work done. I am behind because earlier this week, I had to do orders since so many were out in one day.
It got down to 52° this morning but it is supposed to get up to 87° and tomorrow, it will get up to 90°. Sunday promises to be even hotter.
The fish stay way down at the bottom of the pond while it is chilly. They won't come up to eat until the water gets warmer at the top. They have been acting that way all week long.
I noticed that in one of my big pots out in front of the store, there are ants eating all of the seeds that I keep planting. I just made some homemade ant killer with hot water, Dawn, and Peppermint essential oil. I sprayed it on and they started taking off up the sides of the pot. I hope it really works so I can grow something in there.
We just had our first customers of the day and they were such a nice couple. Amazingly, the large orders, $100 or more, are beginning to pour in, filled with orders for garlic bulbs and orders for next spring. We have had some beautiful, large orders today. We have a few of the soft necked garlic bulbs left and we just got some more hard necked garlic bulbs. If you want to grow some garlic, now is the time to put it in the ground. Learn how to grow garlic here.
Our grow tower is full of large plants. I just pulled the peppermint plant out and transplanted it into a pot that is outside. Actually, it sort of broke apart so I put it in several plants. If they do well this week, they will be for sale out in our plant area.
I pulled all of the plants out of the grow tower this afternoon and transplanted everything. Not sure if it will all take. I cleaned up the tower and put new media for planting into every hole. I picked out some spinach, kale, Asian greens, and lettuce to grow. I cleaned the tower some but there is so much hardened on algae and I got all hot and sweaty so I finally stopped. I was going to plant it today but my feet said no so I am sitting, waiting for it to be 5pm.
I put algae killer in the pond this afternoon but since it is already 4:30pm, I will wait until tomorrow to fill it. I have been working hard today.
David put new flags up today on our front gate. They must make them pretty cheap these days because I think this is the fourth set that we have put up this year.
I got nine eggs this afternoon.
Did I mention that the trash man did not come today and that it is pretty full?
Good morning. I got up and opened the place, fed the fish and animals and made a nice pretend Egg McMuffin for breakfast. I just finished filling the pond. Earlier today, I planted the entire grow tower with two kales, two lettuces, two spinaches, and Mizuna Asian Greens. Then I had to lug jugs of water over here. While I was doing that, our first customers of the day. Of course, I managed to spill water all over the place but I got it cleaned up. Hopefully, the greens I planted will start coming up quickly. It looks pretty sparse in here with an empty grow tower.
The plants I pulled out of the grow tower yesterday seem to be doing well outside so far. It got down to 60° last night and it will be 90° today. It is already almost 80° and it is not even noon yet. I have really been busy trying to get things done in the store because we get a lot of Saturday traffic and we always have a skeleton crew on Saturdays.
Today is the 31st anniversary of my father's passing. It is so hard to believe he has been gone this long. My personality in so many ways is like that of my father. He liked to laugh and joke and I like to do that, too.
It is time to eat but I have customers so I can't run to the house...
Soon I had three sets of customers at once. I rang up the seeds for one family and then they went on a tour. The next one ordered about 50 different packs of seeds and that took me a while to ring up with our super slow high speed internet. Finally rang up the third family and Shay came back from the tour so I ran to eat leftovers from last night.
Now I am back in the Farm Store. Shay is restocking the store. I feel like I got hit by a Mack truck. I hurt all over from too much planting, reaching, stretching, watering, carrying, and lifting yesterday. We had a lot of return customers today as well as some newer folks earlier in the day.
We got eight eggs today as the temperature climbed back up to 90°. I am not sure about the number of eggs, but I have been noticing we are not getting many blue eggs. We definitely will need to get more Ameracaunas and Easter Egger chickens next spring so we can have more blue and green eggs.
The trash man did not come again today...
I was already hurting and now my leg and foot are in a lot of pain. I am home, with my feet up. I took pain meds and put Aspercreme on my right leg and foot.
Matt brought Billy Bob Burgers and the Svengoolie movie was Bride of Frankenstein. I fell asleep during the movie three times because I was so tired and in pain. A hot shower really helped my leg.
Good Sunday morning! I woke up freezing. Now I have some hot tea at 6am. I was hoping to go back to sleep but I could not breathe so I got up. Everyone else is still sleeping.
Lucy woke up and opened my office door (sliding barn door) and came on in. I let her out to go potty and gave her some snacks so we don't wake the others. Kitty went out, too and had a snack. She likes to lounge around on the back deck.
Now it is 7am and I am hungry so I guess the rest of our crew will be awakened...Soon, I will have to go out and feed all of our outdoor animals. I don't really want to. I am all cozy in my warm jammies, robe, and slippers.
Animals are fed, lots of morning chores done.
Now it is 5:30pm. I went over to feed the fish and the pond is just filthy. We had a new filter installed but the guy who installed it would not put it all the way together and he would not show me how it works so I have been afraid to use it since the first one broke after a month. This one is different. So I got up the courage to try back washing the new filter. (Yes, it was the guy who quit several weeks ago. I asked him to put the final piece on top. He said no, that it would fall off.)
So
I read the directions and put on the handle to crank (surprise note to
the guy who said it would fall off--it did not fall off) and tried to
find something that would turn so I could backwash. I tried everything
because the picture on the directions was not the same as the filter.
Finally, thank God, I got it. The water was disgusting. Now I am filling
it again as a lot of water came out. At least now I know how to
use it.
When I went to turn on the water, my neighbor from across the street brought us dinner--homemade chicken soup with dumplings and banana bread. What a sweetheart! Thank you, Carolyn!
