What exactly is Aeroponics and why would I want to choose that method of growing?
You will need good seed for this growing method and you can get the best heirloom seeds at David's Garden Seeds®.
Good morning. It is 39° outside again today. I have been enjoying the cooler weather ever since this past Friday when it was hot and humid at 92°. It felt nasty.
There is always so much to do on Mondays and today is pay day to top it all off.
We had just a few visitors today. I wrote paychecks. Every two weeks, we get paid. On most paydays, David and I each get a paycheck. His name is David and my name is Juanita, same last name. Each check has a different check number. They are for the same amount.
So, today, I deposited both checks by phone as I normally do. My check was approved and deposited right away. I received an approval email for David's check and three minutes later, I received a denied email for David's check saying that it is a duplicate. I checked and did not put one in twice. I did the deposits correctly. By the time I noticed, it was after 5pm.
I redeposited the check but did not hear anything else.
We spent the day working on orders until 6pm.
Hey there, fellow gardeners! Ever heard of aeroponics? It's a pretty cool way to grow plants, and you might be surprised to learn how it works.
Imagine growing plants without soil or even a traditional hydroponic setup. That's aeroponics in a nutshell. It's like giving your plants a spa day for their roots!
In aeroponics, plant roots hang suspended in the air and are regularly sprayed with a nutrient-rich solution. This mist provides everything the plant needs to thrive.
Now, you might be thinking, "How is that different from hydroponics?" Good question! Hydroponics uses water as a growing medium, often with added nutrients. Think of methods like deep water culture or nutrient film technique.
Aeroponics, on the other hand, uses air as its growing medium. The roots are exposed and get their nutrients from the mist. This key difference sets aeroponics apart.
So, can we grow food with aeroponics? Absolutely! In fact, growing food with aeroponics is becoming increasingly popular. You can grow a wide variety of crops, from leafy greens and herbs to fruits and vegetables.
Is aeroponics better than using good old-fashioned dirt? Well, it depends. Both methods have their pros and cons. Soil gardening is familiar and often less expensive to set up initially. We use rock wool to start seeds in our aeroponics unit. It holds the seeds in place until the plant and roots grow. Then the roots grow out of the bottom of the rock wool.
It is 37° this morning. It is April in South Central Texas. How is this possible? Don't get me wrong. I am enjoying the cool weather. But I planted and plants can't come up in this cold weather.
The animals are doing well, no doubt enjoying the weather change. Last Friday was miserably hot and humid.
Good news. According to the latest forecast, this was it for the cold. Tonight's low will be 50° and tomorrow it will get up to 92°, a bit too warm for my blood. From then on it will be lows in the 50s and 60s and highs in the 80s and 90s over the next two weeks with little to no rain. I hate the heat but I would like for the garden to do well.
You will be happy to know that this morning, after 8am, the bank finally decided that my check and David's check are not the same so they finally allowed the second check to be deposited. I could understand if both checks were made out to the same person, but they were not. I think from now on, I will deposit one on payday and the next one, the day after and maybe make it for $1 more. It is good to know that now I can pay bills and that one of us did not work 60 to 80 hours each week, seven days a week, for nothing.
I made delicious French toast for breakfast. I know David is getting tired of eggs. I make them a lot of different ways but he does get sick of them. He won't eat cereal for breakfast.
It is time to get a move on and get ready for the day. My housekeeper will not be coming out this morning as her little boy woke up sick.
It turned out to be a beautiful day with a high somewhere in the 70s. The sun was bright and the blue sky looked so pretty. I spent most of the day filling orders, just looking outside through the window. Occasionally, I would go out to wait on customers or to find some seeds and coffee in the store for a few orders. I sold five dozen eggs.
I put dinner together around 6pm and took it over to Fulfillment. I worked until 7:30pm. Matt was here working until 9pm. He did not come in and watch TV. My feet and legs hurt when I finally climbed the stairs to my home. I took a shower, did the dishes, and sat on the couch. I finally fell asleep there and later went to bed around 11pm.
But aeroponics offers some unique advantages. It uses significantly less water than traditional gardening or even hydroponics. Plus, since the plants aren't growing in soil, there's less risk of soilborne diseases. Our aeroponics system is on a timer and once an hour, it waters the plants.
Is it better to grow in dirt or water? Again, it depends on your priorities. Water-based methods like hydroponics and aeroponics offer faster growth rates and higher yields in many cases.
But soil gardening can be more forgiving and requires less precise monitoring. It really comes down to your gardening style and what you're hoping to achieve.
Now, let's dive a little deeper into aeroponics. What do you need to get started? First, you'll need a system to suspend your plants. This could be a simple PVC pipe structure or a more complex setup.
Next, you'll need a way to create the nutrient-rich mist. This usually involves a pump, tubing, and spray nozzles. You'll also need a reservoir to hold your nutrient solution.
Speaking of nutrients, you'll need to use a specific formulation designed for aeroponics. These nutrients are carefully balanced to provide everything your plants need in a readily available form. There are fertilization treatments specifically made for growing in aeroponics so you don't have to do any math or scientific figuring.
Good morning. I woke up to neuropathy attacking my right foot (which is always fun) around 6am.
There was a gorgeous sun rise instead of overcast skies but when I woke up it was 48° Fahrenheit. It should be miserably hot, in the 90s by this afternoon.
I made eggs with potato, mushrooms, and salsa this morning for breakfast. Not bad at all...
Lots of our plants and flowers are finally coming up but there are more seeds to plant.
We have a bunch of new zinnia seeds that have come in. Some of them are very pretty, especially the new peppermint stick zinnias.
My right hand is still going numb a bit but in weird places. It feels like everything is so loose in there. I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to be or if I have to go for tests. One week ago today, I had the carpal tunnel injection and the doctor said one week. I am using my hand this morning without a brace but things are moving around in there with slight numbness. Maybe because my hand was numb for so long, I have no idea what normal feels like? I will see how it goes for the next few days.
Well, it was another very long and busy day with no in-person customers. I pulled and closed orders. Then David had me put up an article about Texas Superstars, as well as a list of the Texas Superstars seeds that we carry. Here it is:
At 6pm, I left work and went out to see my goat babies. I got to hold George and Gracie. I tried with the two new babies but I could not get them. They both run in this little place by Norton and won't come out.
I came back in and made ahi tuna with fried rice. The ahi tuna is so tasty.
I need to start proofreading my writing better. As I get older, I make more mistakes. My sister keeps telling me about my errors. Lol!
Matt was driving my car on Sunday and the hood popped up and hit the windshield, causing it to shatter. So now we have to get that replaced. He did not tell me but I saw it this morning as I was walking by. It is pretty bad.
Apparently, he did not have it closed all the way after putting some transmission fluid in it on Saturday. He says he was hoping to replace it before I saw it but hasn't been able to get into Medina Glass yet. I think we will call Safelite and have them come out to the farm. I don't think it is safe for him to drive it like that.
We both need to get some better cars but they are so ridiculously expensive right now, like everything else.
When and where can you do aeroponics? That's the beauty of it – almost anywhere! You can set up an aeroponic system indoors, outdoors, or even in a greenhouse. We have a system set up in our Farm Store so customers can see it.
Since you're controlling the environment, you can grow plants year-round, regardless of the weather outside. Pretty cool, right?
Now, let's talk about when aeroponics might be better than hydroponics. Aeroponics excels in situations where maximizing oxygen to the roots is crucial. The constant air exposure promotes healthy root development.
This increased oxygen availability can lead to faster growth and higher yields compared to some hydroponic systems. So, if you're looking for maximum efficiency, aeroponics might be the way to go.
Is it effective in growing food? You bet! Aeroponics is a proven method for growing a wide range of crops. And with growing concerns about water scarcity, its efficient use of water is a major plus. I have grown all sorts of greens in our Farm Store unit, like lettuce, spinach, collards, mustard greens, herbs, and so much more.
So, if you're looking for a sustainable and innovative way to grow your own food, aeroponics is definitely worth considering.
The week is going by quickly. It is 1pm and 82° already. The sun is shining and not a drop of rain in sight. Michelle came to clean. I took her out to see the new baby goats.
We have had zero customers again today. I guess people are spending their money on Easter related items since Easter is just over a week away.
That is all for now. Back to it...

Remember, whether you're growing in soil, water, or air, the joy of gardening comes from nurturing life and enjoying the fruits (or vegetables!) of your labor.
Hello. I had no time all day long to write anything. We had two customers today. There should have been a lot as a neighbor down the road told me weeks ago that she would be sending her garden club friends down to see us today after the meeting. That never happened. I didn't eat lunch until late because I did not want to miss them. The joke was on me.
We are not the only ones going through rough economic times. One of those family vloggers that I watch in Utah put their mansion up for sale today. You know, one of those forever homes that took them a year to build and now they have been living in the three story place for just over two years, spending money as quickly as they could make it and not saving a dime.
Their YouTube views began to tank when they moved into the mansion. The house before this was huge but old and did not have a yard. They should have built something more affordable. Who needs three laundry rooms, cold storage, a five car garage, six bedrooms and six baths with four children, two of whom will leave the house for two years in the next two and three years to go off on a Mormon mission?
Per the listing on Zillow, it is for sale at $4,750,000 and monthly payments are over $28,000 with yearly property tax close to $12,000. What normal Americans can afford that? They don't work at all--just make YouTube videos which went way down when they decided to live like celebrities instead of a nice, normal family. I mean, we all would love to live in a beautiful mansion with a pool and a home theater. Who wouldn't want to go to all of the beautiful places they have been? It would have been so much better to put that money in savings accounts for college for the kids. Now the kids have to be totally humiliated moving back to a regular house, leaving the custom home built for them. So sad.
I scooped seeds and filled orders. We have a lot of new seeds coming in. Lots more to do tomorrow. We are selling a lot of coffee. David says when this lot is gone, that is it for a while. It is not selling like it used to. We are completely out of some of the flavors.
So, get out there and explore the wonderful world of gardening, and who knows, maybe aeroponics will become your new favorite way to grow!
Imagine walking into your backyard and seeing a thriving aeroponic garden, bursting with fresh, vibrant produce. It's a sight to behold!

It is Saturday morning. Fog has settled in on the field next door. Matt just got here with breakfast from Charlie's Daughter--eggs, bacon, French toast and berries. It is good but they took forever so I am starving...
We have a lot to work on and our help won't be here on Monday. In the five years our store has been here during April, not one customer has ever come here during the festival. We don't expect customers today as it is the Strawberry Festival. We never have customers that weekend.
I called it right. Not one person came by the store today. The three of us have been working all day long, packing seeds. It is almost 5pm so we will be stopping soon within the next few hours.
The wind is blowing but the day has been sunny and bright. Tomorrow we should have a lot of wind. I am told from 1pm tomorrow until 10pm that we have a fire weather watch. We have been having quite a few of those lately.
I made pork ribs with noodles and we watched a few episodes of House. The Svengoolie movie is one we have seen. House is interesting but there is always blood and it comes out of unexpected orifices. Now I understand that no matter the diagnosis, there will be surprise blood coming from somewhere totally unrelated but they got me each time for the first few episodes. Now I don't look at the screen all that much. Tonight, a guy's eyeball popped out and then blood but it turns out that this guy was just a hallucination. So gross.
This evening, we are having a full, pink moon which should be nice to see. It should appear here at 8:03pm if you are in our time zone and would like to see it.
So, go ahead and dig in (or, in the case of aeroponics, mist in!) and discover the wonders of growing your own food.

Today is Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week on the Christian calendar. When I was a little girl, our church always gave out palm branches during the service which was fun. Of course, in Texas, we have never gone to a church that does that.
If you would like to read about Palm Sunday, here are some scriptures for you: Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19.
Fog is once again in the field and it really looks cool. It is currently 56° but the temperature will jump 40 degrees to 96 this afternoon.
I made some coffee and ate some of the leftover French toast from yesterday's breakfast from Charlie's Daughter. Now I have to go out and tend to all of the animals. I really don't want to do that right now.
I went out and took care of all of the animals this morning with no problems. The grass and weeds are getting tall so it needs to be mowed. The air felt cool and lovely.
We got ready for church and went. The congregation sang Happy Anniversary to us because Good Friday is our 38th wedding anniversary. That was nice.
Then we got some groceries at Walmart and came home. The wind is kicking up a lot. I plan to stay home for the rest of the day, going out to take care of the animals this evening. It is getting hot out there!
So, if you're passionate about sustainable agriculture, aeroponics is definitely worth exploring. It's a game-changer in the world of food production.
