Toxic Plants For Chickens
(Do Not Feed These To Your Chickens)

Did you know there are toxic plants for chickens that you may have in your yard as well as in your garden? I thought all kitchen scraps were fine for chickens, but they are not! For instance, all plants in the nightshade family should not be given to chickens raw. There are 70 of those, including potatoes. Who knew?

Our chickens will eat almost anything they are given, including things that can potentially hurt them. They just love to peck at things and eat them all day long, not realizing that some things are not good for them. Some things can kill them. I had no idea just how many things on my list could make them sick or kill them.

There are many plants that are not toxic for chickens. Give them lettuce, cabbage, collards, kale, leafy greens, corn, peeled cucumbers, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, cooked veggies, basil, and parsley. They love it all.

Feed them a good layer feed. I also give them some scratch so they don't get bored. In the afternoons, I give them vegetables frozen in ice and meal worms. They love them and the worms provide good protein for the chickens. Make sure to give them oyster shells for the calcium so their eggshells come out strong and don't break easily.

By the way, chickens love eggs, eggshells, meats, and even chicken.
