If you live in Texas, January is the month to plant tomato seeds. No, it is not too early. You see, in Texas, if you want to grow tomatoes, they have to be planted in January indoors so that they are ready to grow by the middle of March. If you do not, it will get too hot before your tomatoes can grow. Do not wait!
Also, if you need it, see a list of January Garden Chores here.
Good morning. It is 59° at 8am. We have a ton of orders but today is a bank holiday as well as a post office holiday. We will close up all of our weekend orders but they will not go out until tomorrow.
Today is Martin Luther King Day but our Farm Store is open so come on by. We are open from 9am to 5pm. We have lots of seeds for spring, especially tomato seeds, all sorts of tomatoes. We also have a lot of herbs to grow in the spring like cilantro aka coriander, basil, mint, parsley, lemon balm, borage, dill, lavender, oregano, chives, sage, white sage, rosemary, thyme, and so much more. What are your favorite spring herbs to grow?
Around 10am, David called me back to my greenhouse. He cleared my plant area outside and helped me organize the inside of my greenhouse. I cleaned up a lot of my plants by taking off the dead parts. David set up the fertilizer for the plants. I have lemons on all of my small lemon trees. Bees are in there working the trees so that is marvelous. By the time we were done in there, we were sweating so we had to go change and get lunch. Then back to work in the Farm Store for me.
We had some great customers come in and buy lots of seeds for their spring gardens. They all knew to plant tomato seeds this month and most already had.
This evening, Texas Gardener Magazine put up a video on Instagram saying that we have the Tycoon tomato and to buy the seeds from us. I was so excited. By the time I went to bed, we had gotten almost 60 additional Instagram followers which is amazing. Thank you, Texas Gardener Magazine!
We have a rich assortment of tomato seeds including beefsteak, roma, slicing, pear, cherry, paste, and plum. Order them today and plant tomato seeds in Texas in January. For the rest of the country, get your tomato seeds early before we run out of your favorite varieties. Last year, we ran out of Juliet tomatoes in March and we just now got more in. The Juliet's best feature is that it is heat tolerant so it does better than most in heat. Let me clarify. If you start getting 100° Fahrenheit temperatures every day in May and for the rest of this summer like we did here last year, you won't get Juliet tomatoes or really any other variety. That is just too hot. But in normal years, when it begins to heat up, the Juliet does very well.
Roma tomatoes, as well as paste tomatoes and plum tomatoes, are good for making sauces, salsas, and ketchup because they contain less water than other tomato types.
Good morning! Matt collected our two puppies, Sue Ellen and Pamela, this morning to take them to be groomed. Why? Because we are having a septic tank issue and David let them out of the gate yesterday evening. Where did they go? Straight to the dirty, nasty water, splashing and having a good, ole time! David washed them both down but decided to send them out for a professional wash this morning.
The puppies are back, all nice and clean now. I am at the Farm Store working. David is in his office. Orders are being filled and a new outdoor guy started today. He worked for us last year for a bit. David is giving him another chance. He will be here three days a week.
Nacho is also here working on stuff out back with a helper. Michelle is here cleaning up my home. I have some laundry going as I walk back and forth, trying to keep up with everything.
Michelle is all done and has gone to her next house. Nacho is permanently placing winterizing plastic on the animal coops so if it gets cold again, and I am sure it will in February, we can easily pull the plastic down and keep our animals warm.
We had our first customer of the day, someone from Saturday who needed another germination kit and some basil seeds. He bought two of them on Saturday. Then a customer from yesterday emailed that he needed more stuff so we special filled and delivered an order for him. We don't normally do that.
If you are interested in starting your seeds early, like when you plant tomato seeds now, you should check our germination kits out. In store only because they are long and would cost a lot to ship, these kits have two trays for bottom watering, 18 mini seed starter reusable pots, two small bags of our germination mix (dirt), tags, a pen for the tags, germination directions, one of our world-famous rulers, and a business card with our two websites on it. This has everything you need to plant tomato seeds and other seeds before the season. And if you need it, we have extra bags of our germination mix for just $5.95 right now.
Today is our payday since yesterday was a bank holiday. I wrote the checks out this morning. They have all been deposited so I can pay bills. It is hard to believe that it is already that far into the month that it is time to pay bills, right?
The Sungold is a hybrid seed which means that if you save the seed, it will not produce the same plant. A hybrid is not a GMO so don't panic. We have many heirloom cherry tomato seeds that produce delicious tomatoes, but this is the best one I have ever had. We have Matt's Wild, Supersweet 100 (another hybrid), Gold Nugget (heirloom), Black Cherry (heirloom) and a lot more but this one is so tasty.
The Sun Gold has been my new favorite cherry tomato for three years now. This tiny seed grows a huge tomato bush that gives the sweetest, orange tomatoes you have ever eaten. They keep giving their sweet fruits from spring through November, until the first frost hits.
David has a bunch of tomatoes growing out in the greenhouse. Some will be for us and most of them will grow into seedlings that will be ready for purchase in the middle of March. A lot of customers would rather buy tomatoes as seedlings instead of having to plant tomato seeds.
It's already Wednesday! I woke up at 4:50am and could not get back to sleep. I feel tired but my nose is clogged even though I have been taking allergy pills. Now that it is light, I can see it is hazy outside. It looks strange. No sunrise we can see today.
I am hoping to build a second chicken coop this spring to house my new chickens that I have not gotten yet. Yesterday, we were trying to figure out where we could place it so that it is close to the other chicken coop. The problem is our septic tank is close by so we can't build a second coop where I want to.
David and I left the farm to get some groceries before 9am. Grocery prices are ridiculous now. I cannot believe this is happening in America. Ever since Covid, things have gone crazy.
The orders are still pouring in and customers, multiple customers are coming in daily now. This is wonderful after such a slow, hot summer and fall.
The hugely popular San Antonio Rodeo Tomato of 2011, the Tycoon Beefsteak Tomato is back. You can find the seeds in our store and on our website here. Originated in Israel, this tomato has become a Texas favorite. It does not disappoint.
David planted these Tycoon tomato seeds the last week of December so they will be ready to plant by mid-March, barring no more weather trouble. We have several large heaters in there to keep about 4,000 spring seedlings warm. They will be for sale in the spring.
Happy Thursday! It is 2:30pm and it has been a very busy day with a ton of customers here at David's Garden Seeds®. We normally don't get many people on a Thursday but this day has been exceptional! I actually spent several hours out in the greenhouse this morning, cleaning it up, cleaning plants up, and planting seeds given to me by customers, some that I ordered from other seed companies, and some that I chose from our own seeds.
The bees are buzzing around happily in the greenhouse, already pollinating my lime and lemon trees which is exciting. I have a lot more to plant but Matt called from the store asking for help as he had three sets of customers and some wanted a tour. I came up and helped them all get checked out and more came. Then I went back to planting.
After that, I had lunch and went in to Pleasanton to pick up David's newest pair of eyeglasses. His vision keeps changing now that he has diabetes. This is the third pair of glasses he has gotten since October.
Now I am in the store working on the computer. I found bags of unmarked soil in here with no label so the guys need to come get it and put the label on it. It is actually some of our germination mix. It is flying off the shelves right now, along with our germination kits, as mentioned above.
This evening, YouTube suggested a video for me about making my own chicken feed. I watched it and found a new, good homesteading channel and a great idea. I took notes and will see what I can find at my local feed store. I also intend to do some more research on making my own chicken food.
I have some exciting zinnia seed news. We have a brand new listing that I just put up on the website for four ounces of my special zinnia seed blend that grows in the two flowerbeds outside of our Farm Store. Now you can buy the exact same zinnia mix of seeds that grows back season after season because we are collecting and cleaning the seeds. Here is the listing:
If you've visited our Farm Store in person during the warmer months, you have seen the beautiful zinnias I grow in the flowerbeds in front of the store. In June of 2021, I chose ten single color zinnia varieties from our stock and mixed them together in a bowl. Then I planted them in both flowerbeds.
The zinnias are in shades of pinks, purples, white, yellow, orange, red, and green. I get more compliments on the zinnias from our customers than I get on anything else out here on the farm.
The zinnias have been a bright, colorful mix with different types of zinnias. Each time we cut them down, we collect the seeds and save them. The zinnias reseed themselves as long as you leave the flowers in the bed to drop their seeds. Now, you can purchase your own four ounce bag of zinnia seeds harvested from our Farm Store flowerbeds to grow in your own garden.
These zinnias are loved by both bees and butterflies so they are a wonderful pollinator attractant.
Right now, you get a four ounce bag for just $9.95.
Here is a link to the listing so you can buy your own bag of my zinnia seed mix.
We have a fresh supply of Germination kits for just $29.95 and Germination Soil in 1/2 gallon and gallon sizes. We have sold a lot of all of them this week and I am pricing more now. We also have some 3 and 4 inch seed starter pots for purchase.
This sugary sweet cherry tomato makes cherry sized tomatoes in clusters that you will love. They are perfect as a snack and in salads. This is the tomato that has the highest amount of vitamin C of any tomato variety so the fruits are super healthy for you.
Good morning and welcome to Friday! It is 57° and the high is supposed to be 58°. Seems a bit crazy to me. It is chilly outside for sure. I know because I had to take Ethel out to do her business while it was still dark out.
We are changing things up a bit in the Farm Store. We will be grinding and brewing coffee for our visitors so they can sample our whole bean coffees. This means it is going to smell so good in our store!
Right now, while we are not getting many eggs, a small fridge will be brought in for the eggs. We have turned off the large refrigerator until the egg production picks back up to save some electricity.
David and I are both putting a lot of emphasis on planting in our greenhouses so we have some nice plants to sell in March and April. We will have about 4,000 tomato seedlings of several popular varieties for your planting convenience.
David and Matt had father/son makeovers so I went with them and went to Tractor Supply to see what I could find for my homemade chicken feed. I found everything but the flax seed and the split peas. I did find them at Walmart but flax seed is expensive. It is a bit cheaper if you buy them ground up.
I had Matt store them in the feed shed and sometime this weekend, we will put them all together and try them out on the chickens and guineas.
This afternoon, I got a 20 pound box from Hoss Tools--my seed potatoes, all four varieties! So excited!
I need to read up on it to see what I should do next. I ripped the bags open to let the potatoes grow eyes before planting. Josh, the new outdoor guy, does not come back to work until Tuesday. David said he would have Josh dig a big trench on Tuesday. I am beyond excited.
Right now, it is 61° and overcast. Nacho just drove up. Not sure why. Brendon brought in a mini fridge and a coffee pot. As I mentioned earlier, we are going to start grinding and brewing some of our pecan coffees for people to smell, taste, and purchase. We are now shipping our coffee so if you want to get some, here is the link.
We first grew the delicious Rose Beefsteak Tomato in the summer of 2015 in our backyard in San Antonio. This is an incredible pink and very tasty tomato. It is great on a burger or in a salad, not sweet but so delicious. The plants are hardy and consistent, producing unblemished fruits year after year. It is one of my favorites!
A customer came in today and he bought ten packs of different tomatoes. He also bought a bunch of other seeds but that is a lot of tomatoes. He will plant tomato seeds all weekend long.
Happy Saturday. I did a lot of things around the house this morning, not to mention feeding all of the farm animals. The customers have been slow this morning, because it is cold. It is now 12:30pm and 56° and overcast.
I just finished eating leftover spaghetti for lunch. I am watching gardening videos and doing computer work while I wait for customers. Of course, we have no employees here because it is Saturday. David has been working in the greenhouse.
We got some more customers and, of course, the cash register software started acting up. I figured out the problem after the last customers left. It took me quite a while to ring them up. But I know what to do now. Apparently, Shopify did some changes again...
We always like to try several varieties of tomatoes each season. There are so many tomato varieties to choose from.
Brandywine tomatoes have a nice, solid, tomato flavor that reminds you of summer. You will enjoy the juicy flavor in a burger as well as in a salad. The plants can grow up to nine feet tall with unique tomato leaves that look more like the leaves of a potato plant.
Brandywine has been around since before the 1880s. I read online that it was one of the first tomato varieties in seed catalogs in the 1880s. Isn't that remarkable?
Happy Sunday! It is 1pm and we just finished a lunch of delicious leftovers, steak, chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Now I have to work on our David's Garden Seeds® website. It is chilly and 55°. It got down to 42° when I first got up. I went out and took care of all of the animals and it felt like I was out in the Arctic. But I survived and got some things done in the house before church.
The sun is shining and there is a lot to do, both inside and outside.
The Homestead Tomato can grow fruits that weigh up to two pounds each which are very nice tomatoes. They taste good and are prolific. This tomato was bred in Florida back in the 1950s to withstand extreme temperatures so it does well in hot and humid conditions.
The important thing to learn from this page is that you must plant tomato seeds early if you are in the South, especially in Texas, because once those 100° temperatures hit, your tomato plants, and pretty much everything else, stops growing. The only things that continue to grow are okra plants and zinnias.
