This page talks about Doomsday Pea Seeds from David's Garden Seeds®. We recommend two types for their ease of growing and production out put. Peas are a cool weather crop.
This is our Doomsday Pea section. It gives instructions on how many pea plants are needed to feed one person for a year.
One
cup of peas has about 120 calories. On a 1200 calorie diet one would
need to consume 10 cups of peas a day. One plant will produce about 100
pods with about 6 pods per. That is 600 peas per plant. It will take
about 100 peas to make one cup.
It will take about two plants per day, 730 plants per year. So let's say about 1000 plants a year for consuming, growing and trading.
You will need about three raised beds that are 4 feet x 8 eight feet.
The
pea is one of the most doable for growing and eating if all we have are
peas. My problem is that I hate peas (David) but snow peas are great.
Peas can be dried or canned. To do so you will need to have the proper equipment to can and/or dry your pea harvest. Stagger your plantings so that you are not harvesting and processing all of your peas at once.
Peas are a cool weather plant.
