This page talks about Doomsday Onion Seeds from David's Garden Seeds®. We recommend two types. One is the 1015Y which is a fall favorite here in the San Antonio area.
This is our Doomsday Onion section. It gives instructions on how many onion plants are needed to feed one person for a year.
There are about 50 calories in about one cup of onions. That is 24 cups on a 1200 calorie diet. Your average size onion should fill at least one cup. So you would need 8760 onions a year.
Let's say you need 9500 onions a year for eating, seed production and trading. You would need about 5000 square feet to grow this many onions.
Onions take about six months to mature, two years for seeds. They can be grown in just about any weather. Some types can be left to overwinter.
Some onions will keep up to six months in a cool, dry storage area. Onions can be dried or canned but it is really not necessary due to the fact that they will keep for a long time.
You can dry them and then grind this into a powder for onion spice. You can make pickled onions out of them as well.
