If you want to make baked beans recipes from scratch, you can use navy, kidney, or pinto beans that you buy dried in the store or you can grow your own in your backyard garden.
If navy beans, also known as white pea beans, are not available, you can use the following:
Black Beans
Black Eyed Peas
Kidney Beans
Pinto Beans
My grandmother, Mildred Pitcher, always made her Millies Baked Beans recipe for family gatherings. She never made enough of them because the dish was always emptied long before the end of the meal! This lady could cook and bake like nobody's business! All of the cousins, aunts, and uncles would devour it. We had a big family!
You will need:
Soak the Navy beans overnight in a pan of water with one teaspoon of salt.
Drain the beans and cover them with fresh water in a large pot. Add the chopped onion and the salt pork strips to the beans. Cook until the beans are tender. Add tomatoes, baking powder, molasses, brown sugar and salt and pepper to taste. Stir and simmer for 30 minutes.
Pour bean mixture into a large baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for one hour or until the top is browned.
Millies baked beans can be served hot or cold.
If you make my grandmother's baked beans recipe, come by the David's Garden Seeds® Farm Store and let me know.
There are some really good canned baked beans on the market now, including our favorite, Bush's Baked Beans in so many flavors. If you don't have a lot of time, you can doctor up some baked beans with our DIY Canned Baked Bean Recipe below.
First, choose your favorite brand and flavor and make sure you get a large can or two smaller cans.
You will also need:
Crumble the cooked bacon and put it in a large pot with the baked beans and the diced and sauteed onions. Add a few tablespoons of barbecue sauce. Then, add a tablespoon each of Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and brown sugar. Stir together and taste. Add more as you like. Some people like more sugar or sauce. Others like more mustard.
Optional: Instead of crumbly bacon, you can add diced ham or cooked and diced salt pork.
Also, if you love mushrooms, add a small jar or can of sliced and drained mushrooms into the mix.
If you love the taste of tomatoes, add some crushed tomatoes as well and stir in.
Remember to taste the final product and then write down the amounts that work well for you.
There you have it, a baked beans recipe that saves you the time of soaking and cooking the beans.
